   Pro.Zhang Di
State Key Lab of Metal Matrix Composites,China

Research Area:
1. Processing of advanced metal matrix composites

2. Basic and applied research of Morph Genetic materials

Research experience:

Di Zhang has received his PhD from Osaka University, Japan. He is now a Chair Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China (since 1994), the director of State Key Lab of Metal Matrix Composites and the Institute of Composite Materials at SJTU (since 2003), and the Professor of Chang Jiang Scholars Program (since 2001). His research interests include the processing of advanced metal matrix composites and the basic and applied research on biomimetic morphology-genetic materials.

To deal with the challenge in the design, preparation and processing of advanced metal matrix composites, Prof. Zhang proposed a strategy combining "controlled type (prototypes), controlled form (enhanced body shape), and controllability (materials properties)".  His group developed and provided more than 30 species, and 2,000 pieces of Al and Ti matrix composite parts for practical key components used in the "Chang-E III" and "Jade Rabbit" lunar rover and many other key models for aerospace and defense systems. Moreover, Prof. Zhang has been devoting to the development of bio-inspired materials (morphology-genetic materials) for the past decade. He has published more than 300 peer reviewed academic articles, 1 English monograph on morphology-genetic materials, and attended international conferences as plenary, keynote and invited speakers for more than 40 times. His research on bio-inspired functional materials has been intensively cited and widely reported by many famous scientific media (e.g., “Discovery Channel News”) in the world.
